Michelin claims 2021 rally title with Alpine

Forty-eight years after securing the FIA World Rally Championship’s (FIA WRC) inaugural title together in 1973, Alpine and Michelin recently clinched the 2021 FIA R-GT Cup with Normandy-based Pierre Ragues in a MICHELIN Pilot Sport-equipped Alpine A110 Rally.

Michelin, a top player in Historic rallying

With an entry of 350 cars for the Tour de Corse Historique (France) on October 4-9 and more than 100 for the same weekend’s RallyLegend (San Marino/Italy), historic rallying is riding a wave of popularity at the moment. Both events saw numerous competitors choose Michelin’s Customer and Classic Racing ranges which incorporate up-to-date technologies proven in the FIA World Rally Championship.

MotoGP™: Bagnaia wins Rossi’s swansong race at Valencia

The Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana, closing round of the 2021 MotoGPTM World Championship and final appearance of Valentino Rossi (Petronas Yamaha SRT), was won by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team). Jorge Martin (Pramac Racing) and Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) made it an all-Ducati podium as a sea of yellow-clad fans paid a last tribute to ‘The Doctor’. Michelin concluded the season in style by contributing to two more MotoGPTM records.

The curtain fell on the 2021 campaign with a fourth win for Bagnaia who started the race in second place behind Martin before easing ahead on the 16th of the afternoon’s 27 laps. Helped by the grip and consistency of his hard and medium MICHELIN Power Slicks front and rear, the Italian not only established a new fastest race-lap record for the Spanish venue (1m31.042s) but also shaved six seconds off the circuit’s previous race-duration benchmark.

Pole-sitter Martin ended up second to complete the championship as the best-placed rookie, while Miller fought back from sixth to join his Ducati colleagues on the podium.

Joan Mir (Team SUZUKI ECSTA) and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) rounded out the day’s top-five.

Unexpected rain forced the riders to fit MICHELIN Power Rains for Friday morning’s free practice, but the rest of the weekend was dry and the entire range of available MICHELIN Power Slicks was used over the three days. For the race, however, all the riders opted for the hard front and medium rear to cope with the hot weather which saw the air and track temperatures reach 24°C and 28°C respectively.

Rossi celebrated the end of his racing career on two wheels by finishing 10th. In total, the Italian superstar spent 14 seasons on Michelin rubber, claiming five world titles, 65 race wins, 124 podium finishes, 43 pole positions and 55 fastest race-laps in the process. Grazie, Vale!

The MotoGPTM circus will remain in Spain for two days of testing (Thursday and Friday) at Jerez in order to prepare for the 2022 world championship.

FIA WEC world titles for Toyota and Ferrari in association with Michelin

While Toyota wrapped up the first-ever world title of the new Hypercar era in association with Michelin at Sakhir International Circuit at the end of October, the result of this weekend’s 8 Hours of Bahrain (Round 8 of the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship) at the same venue saw MICHELIN Pilot Sport-equipped Ferrari 488 Evos clinch the LM GTE Pro and GTE Am crowns.

MotoGP™: Bagnaia claims assertive win in the Algarve

The Grande Prémio Brembo do Algarve – the 17th and penultimate round of the 2021 MotoGPTM World Championship – was won by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team). The race was red-flagged two laps from the end, with Joan Mir (Team SUZUKI ECSTAR) and the winner’s team-mate Jack Miller in second and third places. It was another successful weekend for Michelin whose tires helped Bagnaia to establish a new track lap record (1m38.725s) in qualifying.

A fourth endurance world title for Toyota and Michelin

Toyota’s one-two finish at last weekend’s 6 Hours of Bahrain allowed the Japanese carmaker to make sure of the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship crown with one round remaining. Equipped with MICHELIN Pilot Sport tires developed specifically for the sport’s latest-generation prototypes, the Toyota GR010 Hybrid will go down as the first title-winning car of endurance racing’s Hypercar era.

MotoGP™: Misano glory for Márquez as Quartararo clinches the 2021 title

The Gran Premio Nolan del Made in Italy e dell'Emilia-Romagna was won by Marc Márquez, ahead of his Repsol Honda Team team-mate Pol Espargaro and Enea Bastianini (Avintia Esponsorama). Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) completed Round 16 of the MotoGPTM World Championship at Misano, Italy, in fourth place to make sure of the 2021 Riders’ crown, Michelin’s 32nd in motorcycle racing’s premier series since 1973.
